Gas Station Financing and Buying a Station Business: Notes for Danville, VA Owners
Gas station financing through this site covers the station as a business: the store’s equipment and stock, the registers, the wash equipment, payroll and, for a buyer, the business itself. Work on the site itself, from the forecourt pavement to the fuel lines and dispensers, is property work outside this site, and so is buying the lot.
For a buyer, a term loan can fund the business purchase and a working capital loan can carry the first weeks of payroll and orders. Gas station lenders and the other funding partners Swiftbridge works with set their own terms; what they can look at first is how the station earns.
How to Buy a Gas Station Business? Start With the Seller’s Sales Records
A station earns in two places, the pumps and the store, and the seller’s records should show them apart. A buyer who starts with those records knows what the business is worth before any talk of funding. Records a buyer can ask the seller for:
- Monthly sales split between fuel and inside-store goods, for at least two years
- Business tax returns for the same years
- The fuel supply agreement, with its end date and whether it can transfer to a new owner
- Store supplier invoices and the current stock list
- The equipment list: registers, coolers, hot-food cases, ice machines and any wash system
- Payroll records and the staff schedule
A partner reviewing the purchase can ask for the same documents, so one set of copies covers both steps. The steps of a station purchase, from the price breakdown to supplier terms, are laid out in how to buy a gas station or c-store.
Convenience Store Funding: Hot-Food Cases and Inside-Store Stock
Inside the store, the hot-food case and the coffee station are the equipment that earns per square foot. Convenience store funding for them fits equipment financing, and the store stock around them can run on a line of credit.
Illustration only, invented figures: a hot-food case at $8,900 and a coffee station at $5,400, $14,300 together, financed over 36 months at an annual rate of 12%. The monthly payment works out to $474.96 in this example, and 36 of them total $17,098.56. Cooler doors and wholesale stock for the inside store also come up in the grocers and c-stores article.
How to Buy a Convenience Store? Start With the Inventory Count
Buying a convenience store has a step a buyer can miss: the stock on the shelves can be counted on the closing day and paid for on top of the agreed price, at cost, when the purchase agreement says so. A buyer who plans only for the price can come up short.
Illustration only, invented figures: a store agreed at $95,000, a closing count of $38,500 in stock, and a $15,000 cushion for the first orders and payroll. In this example the buyer needs $148,500 in all, of which the counted stock is 25.9% (our arithmetic on invented figures).
Funding can follow the same split: a term loan for the business, inventory financing or a line for the counted stock, and working capital for the cushion. How much of each a partner funds is the partner’s decision.
Business Loans for Gas Stations When a Danville, VA Gas Station Needs Reach-In Coolers
Reach-in coolers line the back wall of a station store and run every hour it is open. Business loans for gas stations that need new coolers fit equipment financing, where each cooler door has a price a partner can check against the vendor’s quote.
POS systems are the second piece: the register, the scanner, the card readers and the software that tracks fuel and store sales together. Supplier terms are the third. A distributor that bills weekly expects payment before the shelf stock sells through, and a line of credit can cover each invoice until the store’s sales catch up.
Car-wash equipment is its own purchase: the wash system, the dryers and the pay station. Equipment financing can cover the machines; the wash bay and the building around it are property and stay outside this site.
